England Hockey Awards 2015 - Roger Lomas
England Hockey Awards 2015 - Roger Lomas - Perkins Slade Lifetime Achievement Award (North HA)

England Hockey Awards 2015
Perkins Slade Lifetime Achievement Award: Roger Lomas

Roger Lomas has been a hockey player for around 50 years. He has never played at “elite” level until his more recent forays into international hockey as an enthusiastic and active member of LX Club.

His club is Sheffield Hallam HC, part of the larger Abbeydale club, where he has played virtually all his hockey. From his earliest days at the club Roger has been at the heart of everything that is good about Sheffield. He has captained many of the teams, from 2nds through to 7th's and always been someone who has looked to drive through change to ensure the continued growth both of the club membership and its facilities. He has taken the lead in ensuring that after the first artificial pitch was installed funds were available to replace it when necessary.

At county level, Roger has been an active member of the executive committee since the 1980’s and has been heavily involved in running county cup and league competitions throughout. He has chaired both Cup and League committees for several years and been responsible for extending the range of cup competitions beyond the usual 1st/2nd teams through to 6 levels for men and 4 for women. He was also responsible for increasing the numbers of leagues for both men and women and, at lower levels, to split the leagues geographically to minimise the amount of travel for those less able but still keen players. He has also been responsible for improving communications between clubs/county officials in the area of competitions, insisting on electronic communications ages before other areas did so. He was also involved in the negotiations to form a combined Men’s/Women’s county association and lent support later when combining two single (women) gender associations into the Yorkshire HA. In 2005, he was appointed President of YHA and continues to play a significant role in that association.

At regional level, Roger shares his league/competitions experience as an active member of the North Competitions committee. He has been an active member of NHA Council for over 12 years. He is in his third year of office as the association’s president.

Roger has also been heavily involved in England Hockey’s Competitions Committee, working closely with Sue Catton and Stephen Barlow on national competitions. He is currently the Chairman of the EH Knockout Competitions Committee. He has had a significant involvement in the County Championships, where Roger is keen to see this historic competition continue. Sheffield/Abbeydale have hosted regional and final rounds of this competition most successfully.

He has also been a regular "hockey maker" at a variety of international events hosted by England Hockey.

Since “coming of age” (60), Roger has been a keen member of LX Club and has travelled extensively with them. He has recruited a number of other enthusiasts. He is still much involved in national/regional Masters hockey and has made a major contribution in bringing National Team management closer to regional Masters volunteers to improve communications and extend the scope of Masters hockey.

Other North People to receive awards were:
Young Umpire of the Season: Jenny Ratcliffe – NHUA
Club or HUA Umpire of the Season: Graham Seaton (Sheffield Bankers H.C.)
