REPORT – COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS DAY
SATURDAY 21ST MAY 2016
AT CANNOCK HOCKEY CLUB

Two North Counties qualified for the finals day from the preliminary rounds of this year’s County Championships held at Sheffield over the weekend of 7th/8th May. Durham, having narrowly defeated Yorkshire in the last game of that weekend by 4 goals to 3 took first place and met Kent, the runners-up from Pool 2, in the semi-final, whilst Yorkshire met the winners of that group, Sussex in the other semi.

Durham, with an emergency goalkeeper in place (I think it was their manager), eventually succumbed 3 – 5 against Kent whilst in a lively, hotly contested game Yorkshire prevailed 2 – 0 against a well drilled and talented Sussex side. Both goals were scored by Carl Smith (Leeds).

The final, despite torrential rain throughout, was a highly entertaining affair, with both sides contributing flair and skill in a pacey game with lots of goalmouth action, controversial (in both sides favour) reversals of contentious decisions and a few goals as well. Yorkshire took the lead in the first minute of the game with a well worked passing move down the right flank finished off by Pol Soms (Leeds). Kent replied with two fast paced counter attack goals together with an outrageous over his head lob-volley, on the full, from an overhead directly into the “D” by the all alone Kent striker. All this was in the first 12 minutes to see Kent lead 3 – 1. As the weather got worse, Yorkshire clawed their way back in to the game and grabbed a lifeline 2 minutes from half-time when a cross from the right was expertly deflected in by Martin Sutherland (Sheffield Hallam). They struck once more early in the second half from open play, Oliver Ward (Cannock) converting, to level up the game.

On 45 minutes Yorkshire retook the lead with Danny Berry (Wakefield) on hand, to chop the ball in after the ball seemingly ricocheted around in the “D” for some time. It was Kent’s turn to reply, which they duly did with just short of 20 minutes to go when they squeezed the ball in from a tight angle on the right with Yorkshire desperately trying to clear their lines. Chances came and went in the ensuing minutes for both sides and with “strokes” beckoning and the Management starting to consider the options, Yorkshire attacked once more with just over a minute left on the brightly lit (the weather wasn’t getting any better!!!) scoreboard clock. This time Kent were desperately trying to get the ball to safety but Oliver Ward forced the ball home from close range to seal the win with 45 seconds left.

Yorkshire have now won the “B” Division title in 2014 and the “A” Division in 2015 and 2016 over the last 3 years.
