Tagging things

Tagging is an important part of our website, it allows different parts of the website to be collected together under a common term – the tag.

For example, we may have the following pages:

  • (posts) a news post about an upcoming umpires course
  • (wanted) a club announcement asking for volunteer umpires
  • (downloads) a hockey rules downloadable document
  • (pages) a page detailing umpire contact information for the current season

If all of these pages are tagged with the word umpire then we can provide links to list all these pages on page so that the website visitor does not have to search in each section for pages relating to umpires.

One tag or two?

How many tags should be added to a page? There is no “right” answer, it depends on what the page content is about.

As a rule of thumb, tag each major topic that the post refers to. If in doubt, tag it – better to have too many than too few.

Over time, obscure tags will not show in the Tag Cloud anyway.
