Taxonomy

There are two main ways to organise posts, and some other page types – Category and Tag.

Only one Category should be assigned to a news post (the website allows more, but we prefer not to use this feature) whilst there can be multiple Tags.

Category

Current approach is to use Category to reference the main ‘part’ of the website the item belongs to, e.g. Clubs (any articles predominantly aimed at clubs in general.), Umpires for (currently) posts in the Umpires section of the site.

Some other categories are defined already, see the admin category page.

Tags

Example tags used so far: umpiresrulesclubsnewsletterresults, etc.

This allows us to show lists of categories (a bunch or pages related by a main category) and lists of tags – or a tag cloud – (a bunch of pages from different categories all with something in common).

Approach

Using this approach:

  • categories should be fixed and managed – adding new categories requires agreement.
  • tags are dynamic and any (usually) single word can be added as a tag as seems appropriate to the content being added. (ultimately, tags can be checked and those that only appear a small number of times (once we have large numbers of tags) can be removed if desired. (edited)
